Many thanks for your kind words about the workshop that I presented to you and the other parents who came out that evening. A workshop is only as good as the participants who attend. The parents who attended this workshop were obviously passionate and committed to their wonderful children.

One additional document that I would suggest at this time is essential for families to read and understand is the Ministry Memorandum dated Dec. 19/2011 signed by Barry Finlay. (A few months ago, Andrea Gordon of the Toronto Star wrote an excellent article on this topic and provided a link to the memorandum.) One of the most important lines in the memorandum is the following "All students with demonstrable learning based needs are entitled to appropriate accommodations in the form of special education programs and services, including classroom based accommodations." The word "entitled" is very imporant. Here is the link to where it can be found:
http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/general/elemsec/speced/2011CategoryException.pdf

If there is anything we can do to help further, please don't hesitate to contact us at torontofamilynetwork@gmail.com. As I explained at the workshop, we are a grassroots regional family network affiliated with Family Alliance Ontario and involved with the SSAH/Passport Provincial Coalition, among other groups. We are not an agency and we have no paid staff but we try our best to help parents navigate the school system or other sectors that involve the well-being of their children with additional needs.

All the best to you and your family.

Take care,

Janis

Janis Jaffe-White
Coordinator (volunteer)
Toronto Family NetworkJanisnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9020242719972966632.post-26331485375050300272011-05-21T21:39:16.379-04:002011-05-21T21:39:16.379-04:00Hi Ashley!
